Tips for Students who did Diploma + Engineering

This post is for those students who are preparing for GATE CSE and who did Diploma + Engineering. (Instead of the normal path of 11-12th Science & then Engineering)

It is my personal observation that majority of students who do engineering after diploma are bad in Mathematics, in General. (Diploma courses do not have rigorous Maths and Diploma students also miss first-year math courses in engineering due to direct second-year admission) I am not talking about Tier 1 diploma colleges, but in general diploma students are at a disadvantage when it comes to Maths.

So how should diploma students prepare for GATE CSE

  • Do not prepare Linear Algebra, Calculus first. Keep them for the end.
  • Prepare Discrete Maths(Very easy) & Discrete Probability. Keep Continuous Probability for the end.
  • Prepare all Computer Science subjects, Aptitude (Don't ignore it).
  • Prepare Linear Algebra. At least prepare enough that you will be able to solve 1-mark questions. A detailed study is Optional.
  • Prepare Calculus (for CSE the questions are easy) & Continuous Probability enough to solve easy questions. A detailed study is Optional.

If you prepare Computer Science subjects completely, it won't be too hard to crack GATE. Make sure you are not spending months for preparing Linear Algebra, Calculus, Continuous Probability. If you are not good at it, you should break the day into three parts, give two for revision of all previously completed subjects & Then do LA, Calculus in the last part.

No matter what happens do not start your GATE preparation with LA, Calculus, and start preparation of LA, Calculus only when you are through with all other subjects.

Some resources -

Probability -

First, watch some +2 Youtube lectures. Then you can refer to any coaching lectures then go to standard lectures (or any other lectures or book).  If you start reading a book directly then it will be difficult for you to understand and you will lose your confidence.

Linear Algebra –

Complete the 3Blue1Brown playlist on YouTube then go for Gilbert Strang lectures. I will suggest you complete this course from MIT website and try to solve TA problems, assignments, and exam papers.

  1. Hello bhaiya I have also done Diploma and now pursuing B.TECH (10+3+3) and my question is how to improve my problem solving skills. When I see a question I could not get the logic behind it.
